Running your first paid ad campaign isn’t about chasing clicks or “hacking” an algorithm. It’s about clarity. Clarity on what you’re offering, who you’re talking to, and what you want them to do. Paid ads can be a smart way to grow—but only when there’s a real strategy behind the spend.
Here’s how to prep before hitting publish—and what to keep an eye on once things are live.
Start With a Real Goal
“Sell more stuff” is not a clear goal. Before you put money behind anything, get specific. Are you trying to book discovery calls? Get people to sign up for a webinar? Sell a seasonal product? One clear goal keeps your campaign focused—and helps you measure whether it’s actually working.
Know Who You’re Talking To
If you’re speaking to everyone, you’re connecting with no one. You need to know your ideal customer profile (ICP). Who are they really? What industry are they in? What pressures are they feeling? What would make them stop scrolling and say, “that’s exactly what I need”?
Your ad should sound like it was written just for them—because it was.
If you haven’t built an ICP yet, start with your best current customers. Look at the traits they share. What they needed, how they found you, why they chose you. Build from there.
Pick One Platform
Trying to advertise on every platform at once is a quick way to waste time and budget. Choose the one platform where your audience is most active and start there. Facebook and Instagram work well for visual brands and consumer products. Google Ads are strong if people are already searching for what you offer.
Master one channel before moving to the next.
Set a Budget You’re Okay Losing (At First)
Your first campaign is a learning experience. Think of your budget as buying clarity. What message lands? What audience responds? What’s worth scaling?
Start with a small, testable budget—$10–$20/day for 7–10 days is usually enough to learn something valuable.
Have a Clear Offer
What problem are you solving? How are you making your customer’s life better?
Lead with that.
Skip the long intros and clever wordplay. Your ad should answer three things in under three seconds:
- What is it?
- Why should I care?
- What do I do next?
People don’t buy features—they buy better outcomes. Make your offer about them, not you.
Don’t Send Them to Your Homepage
Where you send people matters. If your ad is about a product, don’t make them go find it—link straight to the product page. If it’s about booking a call, send them to the booking page.
Keep it focused. No distractions. No dead ends. A strong landing page should match the message and energy of the ad.
Watch What Happens (Then Adjust)
Once your ad is live, check in daily. Don’t obsess—but pay attention. Are people clicking? Are they taking action? Are you spending too much for too little?
Test one change at a time: a new image, different headline, or slightly refined audience. Small tweaks can lead to big results.
